About this test
High-Sensitivity Troponin T measures very low concentrations of cardiac troponin T, a protein released into the bloodstream when heart muscle cells are injured. It may be used by clinicians as part of an evaluation for myocardial injury and in selected cardiovascular risk assessments.
This test is not appropriate for self-evaluation of active chest pain, pressure, shortness of breath, fainting, or other symptoms that could represent a heart attack or another medical emergency. Anyone with those symptoms should seek emergency care immediately rather than wait for outpatient laboratory testing.
An elevated result does not by itself identify the cause of cardiac injury. Results should be interpreted with symptoms, timing, medical history, kidney function, electrocardiography, repeat measurements when clinically appropriate, and other diagnostic findings.
