About this test
B-Type Natriuretic Peptide, or BNP, is a hormone released primarily by the ventricles of the heart in response to increased pressure and stretching. BNP testing may support the clinical evaluation of people with symptoms or findings that raise concern for heart failure.
BNP is not a standalone diagnosis. Results can be influenced by age, kidney function, body composition, heart rhythm, exercise, and other medical conditions, and should be interpreted together with symptoms, physical examination, imaging, and other clinical information.
This test should not be used to delay urgent evaluation of severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, rapidly worsening swelling, or other potentially serious symptoms. Labcorp lists a typical turnaround time of within one day and notes that high-dose biotin supplements may interfere with testing; patients should discuss biotin use before collection.
