What can this test tell me?
This test measures cortisol in a morning blood sample. Cortisol is made by the adrenal glands and varies during the day. A clinician may use the result as part of an evaluation of adrenal function, with further testing depending on the clinical question.
How should I prepare?
Arrange a morning collection according to your requisition, and make sure the collection time is recorded. Tell the ordering clinician about steroid medicines, estrogen and biotin supplements. Labcorp identifies high-dose biotin as a possible source of interference; obtain preparation instructions before your visit. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
Common questions
Why does the collection time matter?
Cortisol is usually highest early in the morning and declines during the day. Results must be interpreted using the collection time and the laboratory reference range.
Is this the same as a saliva or 24-hour urine cortisol test?
No. This listing is a morning blood test. Saliva testing, timed urine collection and other cortisol protocols answer different clinical questions and require separate orders.
