Alpha-Gal IgE

About this test

A blood test designed to evaluate IgE antibodies associated with alpha-gal syndrome, sometimes called red meat allergy.

Alpha-gal syndrome can be associated with delayed allergic reactions after eating mammalian meat or exposure to mammalian-derived products. This test may be useful for patients with reactions such as hives, swelling, itching, gastrointestinal symptoms, or allergic-type symptoms occurring several hours after eating beef, pork, lamb, venison, or other mammalian meats.

Best for: suspected alpha-gal syndrome, delayed reactions after red meat, tick exposure history with new meat reactions, or patients wanting targeted alpha-gal IgE testing.

Important: Alpha-gal testing should be interpreted in clinical context. If you have severe allergic reactions, trouble breathing, throat swelling, or anaphylaxis symptoms, seek emergency care.
